Corridors

"Another fabulous DVD-R collaboration between Root Strata label/Tarentel member Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and San Francisco filmmaker Paul Clipson. “Corridors,” like “Constellations of Spring” and “Two Suns” before it, showcases the remarkably symbiotic relationship that these two share, with Clipson supplying simply gorgeous Super 8 abstractions which are accompanied by Cantu’s blown-out, woozy drones and loops. The compositional tendencies of both are really just perfectly matched here, each presenting media which is at once striking in its clarity and obfuscated beyond recognition. The piece begins with crystalline images of water juxtaposed with brilliant, deep red sunsets set to a glorious, skyriding loop from Cantu which seems perilously on the verge of being eradicated by surges of hiss and static. Clipson’s images readily bring other filmmakers to mind (Brakhage’s use of collage, Teshigahara’s Antonio Gaudi, Harry Smith’s Late Super Impositions, Ackerman’s sense of space/place), but he has an aesthetic that is truly his own. Cantu, as always, is stellar, putting forth a meditative flight into the starry, blackened night. This is out of print from the label, but seems to be available at Mimaroglu still.
